Decision scope
What this calculator answers
Contribution margin shows how much realized revenue remains after costs that rise with sales volume. That remainder must cover fixed costs before the business earns an operating profit. This calculator keeps variable and fixed costs separate, then reports contribution profit, operating profit, variable cost rate, and the revenue required to break even.
Transparent math
How the calculation works
Product cost, fulfillment, other variable costs, and percentage-based fees are subtracted from revenue. The remainder is contribution profit, and dividing it by revenue produces contribution margin. Fixed costs are then subtracted to estimate operating profit. Break-even revenue divides fixed costs by the contribution margin rate.
Worked example
Put the result in context
A business produces $200,000 of revenue, incurs $70,000 of direct product cost, $18,000 of fulfillment, 4% in variable fees, and $12,000 of other variable cost. The remaining contribution must cover $65,000 of fixed cost before the period becomes profitable.
Methodology
Make the estimate defensible
- 01Classify costs by whether they change when one more unit is sold.
- 02Use realized revenue after discounts, refunds, and credits.
- 03Keep fixed costs inside the same reporting period as revenue and variable costs.
Interpretation
What counts as a good result?
Higher contribution margin creates more room for acquisition, overhead, and profit, but the right target depends on price, mix, capacity, and business model. Track both the percentage and total contribution dollars. A higher percentage can still produce too little cash when volume is low.

Limitations
- Mixed products can have materially different contribution economics.
- Step costs may behave as fixed within one range and variable at higher volume.
- Tax, financing, inventory timing, and non-operating items are excluded.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between gross margin and contribution margin?
Gross margin normally subtracts product or service delivery cost. Contribution margin also subtracts other costs that vary with volume, such as payment fees and commissions.
Are marketing costs variable?
Performance marketing can be treated as variable for a channel model, but brand programs and salaries may be fixed within a reporting period. State the treatment consistently.
Why calculate break-even revenue?
It shows the sales level where contribution profit exactly covers fixed costs, before tax and financing effects.
Can contribution margin be negative?
Yes. A negative contribution means each additional sale loses money before fixed costs are considered.
